    Hi guys,

Just recently been looking at some of the cheap and cheerful mod suggestions on another thread - interesed in the H7 bulbs -  Just wondering; where the best place to buy some?

This seems like it would replace them all or would i need anything extra:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK4-1998-XENON-WHITE-BULB-KIT-50-H7-H1_W0QQitemZ310184104272QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item483869d150

Also i've noticed a lot of people complaining they look a bit chav like? This is deffinately not the look i want!

Just want brighter lights! Has anyone got any better alternative suggestions (cheap)?

Just want to buy the whole kit in one and not faf around with finding them separately.

Thanks in advance for your responses! Kris.

I just bought some Phillips extreme bulbs frompower bulbs direct. They have an eBay store as well (search for power_bulbs_direct).

Used these guys for a few years and they are like ronseal!

And no, they don't look chavvy, just nice and white

I think you have getting confused with HIDs being 'chavvy'

You could put osram nightbreakers or the phillips extreme that Josh stated above.

I tried changing to many types of different bulbs before i gave up and fitted projectors and HID's. The phillips extreme were probably the brightest ones i tried but didn't have a very long beam IMO so driving at night was still hard work with dipped beam on.

What HIDS and projectors did you get ?

    Links would be great !

I agree the Phillips extreme are the best of the standard filament bulbs. I had Osrams before but they only lasted 2 years.

I agree about HIDS, but I always found them really expensive to do properly. When I bought the car new, I just could not find a good reason to fork out the £800 VW were asking and to be honest, I still can't.

Do you know if it is possible to buy Xenon driving lights that could be fitted in the lower bumper grills like fog lights?

If the above was available, I would wire these in with a separate switch to solve all my lighting needs!

You can get HID's for normal headlights now but as far as i am aware they are not legal..even with projectors it's a grey area

They are not legal. It's been covered tons of times. For them to be legal, they need to be type tested, be auto levelling & also needs to have windscreen washers.Only headlights fitted at the factory are type tested (or genuine OEM parts).

The HID lights are designed with specific reflectors which are not in the standard lights. Also, projectors don;t mean that you can upgrade to HIDS cos of the reasons above. A lot of projector lights are still designed for a halogen beam pattern.

Basically the rheostat mod is illegal, putting HIDS in a standard lamp are illegal, any headlight kit that has an option to upgrade to HID's (FK) is illegal.

Seriously, putting better bulbs in a standard light is the best idea (along with checking you get enough voltage to the lights in the first place!!!!)

I just wish the police would fine everyone who had these kits. They are so dangerous to oncoming drivers it is untrue.

All this HID discussion is futile anyways. In a couple of years, LED's will replace Halogen & HID's, so we will have this discussion all over again!

If they are fitted correctly they are no different to OEM projectors with HID'S.. i do agree putting them in standard lamps is a defo no no

it's just that fitted correctly means a CE marked headlamp, designed for HID's, with the right reflectors, with auto levelling and with headlamp wash.

As far as I know, that discounts 100% of solutions except direct OEM lights (factory fitted or retro fitted). Even those OEM retrofits with rheostat mod are not correctly fitted, hence my sweeping comment earlier.

If someone produced a kit that fulfilled all the criteria (I just wish Hella did this kit) at a good price, I would be first in line!!!

Phillips extreme bulbs seem to be the best H7 then? Any ideas how much a full set would cost?

Thats cool but.. which other bulbs did you use with them? I need H7, H1, W5W

What i'm looking for is a full set of the phillips bulbs like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK4-WHITE-XENON-BULBS-HEADLIGHT-UPGRADE-SET-HID_W0QQitemZ380193448551QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item58854ba267

Apparently the ones above are just blue coloured halogen bulbs to make them look like xeon - i take it the phillips are actually xeon?

Could i buy phillips xtreme h7 and h1 then fit LEDs for the sidelights?

Would that work or looks bad?

    Thanks, Kris.

Thought i would join in too as ive been on this forum for 2 years and not posted.

I too am looking to buy new bulbs as my H7's just blew... i think anyway. i put them on the other night and they pinged out in tandem. checked the fuses but they seem fine. going to whip out the bulbs later.

worringly they were phillips blue vision H7's and i have only had them 2 years. i was looking at the phillips x treme ones too as a replacement. the blue vision ones did have noticeable difference though and the sidelights are also blue vision 501's and they provide a good match being all white so you dont have one circle yellower than the other as you do in standards.

On the HID front, i had angel eye projectors a while back and was considering putting HID kit in them, but what kept annoying me was the steaming up of the light lens. something which really was annoying me so i went back to standard headlamps.

Oh yeah one last thing, i too have a Tornado Red Mk4, my 2nd one actually. Big Smile

You need H7 for your dipped beam... sold here with phillips extreme 501's also which are your sidelights

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHILIPS-X-TREME-POWER-H7-EXTREME-XTREME-FREE-W5W-501_W0QQitemZ330403311067QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4ced926ddb

Then you need H1 for your main beams

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHILIPS-X-TREME-H1-LIGHT-BULB-80-55W-HONDA-TOYOTA-NEW_W0QQitemZ280460710158QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item414cc2d10e

Then if you have fogs like me its H3 which i couldnt see in the phillips extreme range only phillips blue vision H3's

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/H3-Philips-BlueVision-Xenon-effect-bulbs-4000k-pair_W0QQitemZ300394761026QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item45f0ec4b42

so in all you need to make sure you have a pair of

    H1's

    H7's

    and 501's

    with optional H3's
